The Actuary Career Path
Date: 11/29/2011

The Actuary Career Path

Actuaries are experts in assessment of risk, and utilise technology and tried and true methods of analysis. Traditionally, most actuaries have found positions at insurance companies and pension programs, assessing plan solvency and fitness. Non-traditional employment among actuaries is on the rise, especially in specialisms such as professional trustees, finance and consulting.

Finance Actuary

Actuaries working in this field use tables, predicitve models, theories and statistical methods to predict financial and economic outcomes of future events, including insolvency and operational risk

Professional Trustee

After many years of experience in the finance industry, an actuary may specialise to become a “professional trustee” which involves sitting on pension scheme boards and ensuring the fund is run appropriately. Professional trustees are sometimes referred to as “independent trustees” as they are not related to either the trust grantor or its beneficiaries.

Casualty Actuary

Actuaries working in the specialism of casualty analyse catastrophic risks that can happen to people or tangible property. These include insurance for auto, homes, commercial properties, medical malpractise, deeds and titles, product liability, work related injury, terrorism and acts of war.

Life, Health and Pension Actuary

Actuaries specialising in pensions deal with the risk of mortality and morbidity of individuals. These actuaries produce and sell products including life insurance, mortgage and credit insurance, annuities and pensions, short and longterm disability insurance, long term care insurance for old age and medcal, dental and health care savings accounts. Actuaries in this specialism determine what rate a person will pay for any of these insurance programs based on the individual's answers to a set of questions that quantify their level of morbidity or mortality.

Consulting Actuary

Actuaries with significant knowledge of specialised industries such as health, technology or finance often take a position consulting in these fields. Work in these non-traditional areas includes assisting a corporation when it offers stocks or securities, when it releases a new product or service or when it takes over another company.

Expert Witness

Actuaries who have spent time in a finance career path may utilise their years of experience to become a professional witness in the courts. Here, actuaries apply their analytic skills to determine the amount of lost wages or lost profits due to criminal actions against an individual or corporation. Their findings are used by a jury to award damages to victims or families.

Finding a job in advertising
Date: 10/31/2011

Finding a job in advertising

Advertising is a field that a large number of people want to make their way in to; it’s creative and strategic, logical and quirky. However, its popularity means it’s becoming more and more difficult to find a job in advertising – particularly if you’re looking for an entry level position. Whilst there’s no guarantee that any of the following tips will definitely ensure you find your idea role – here are some great ways to find those elusive jobs in advertising!

Work out what position you’re interested in: within the advertising industry, jobs titles include designer, strategist, planner, account handler, market researcher, and project manager – amongst others. Do your research; work out where your skills would be best utilised and what positions you’re most interested in before you begin to apply. Knowing your desired job role not only shows you’ve looked into all the options, it also illustrates that you have a passion for the industry.

Do some work experience. This doesn’t just look great on your CV, it will also confirm to yourself that you really do want a job in advertising. Rather than applying to the big, multinational companies first, see if there are any local agencies who would offer work experience. The more work experience you do, the more skills you’ll gain – but remember, it’s important to be able to show how each placement has helped your development.

Find out what tools are used in your chosen job role – and familiarise yourself with them! Some computer software used in advertising is free – like Google Analytics – whilst other tools, like PhotoShop, may be costly but will be worthwhile mastering. Find out what’s being used in your ideal job, and once you feel comfortable with it, add a line to your CV, stating your level of proficiency.

Set up a LinkedIn profile, and join some advertising related groups. LinkedIn is the online equivalent of a CV, where employers can take a look at the skills of a potential employee, and individuals can network to find others in similar roles to their own. Groups on LinkedIn allow users to chat about current trends – and with new advertising campaigns launching ever day, this is particularly useful for keeping up with industry news!

Make sure that your CV and any correspondence you have with an advertising agency or potential employer is triple-checked. You’re looking for a job in advertising, where attention to detail is key, regardless of what position you’re interested in. Things like typos, poor grammar or hard to read font are all reasons that your CV may end up at the bottom of the pile – so check, check and check again.

A first advertising job can be hard to find – and if you are offered a job, be aware that it may be a very junior role – so be prepared to work your way up from the bottom! However, if you’re creative, bright and have a real interest in influencing people – maybe advertising is for you!
